Application Deadline 21/2/2025
Workshop 1 – April 5th, 2025. Glasgow
Workshop 2 – tbc (September)
Concert – Scotland late September/October date tbc
The Night With… announces its sixth call for emerging composer development opportunity for emerging composers and those who may not have had many professional development opportunities.
This year, we will be working with Stephanie Lamprea, Richard Craig and Darren Gallacher (soprano, flute and percussion). Electronics are optional but not required.
Selected pieces will be workshopped and performed in late 2025 as part of the tour.
We are seeking proposals from emerging composers. We will select five composers to attend the first workshop, which will be an introduction to the players and the instruments. The composers then will write a new c. 5-10 minute work for the trio which will be workshopped. At least one piece will be chosen for inclusion in The Night With… tour in late 2025.
We are particularly interested in hearing from composers from minority backgrounds, including but not limited to women, trans, non-binary, and other gender-minority artists. Artists from all underrepresented groups are also welcomed and encouraged to apply.
Workshop 1 will be an introduction to the performers and the instruments. There is no expectation of composers having material written for this workshop, though short examples to try would be welcome.
Workshop 2 will be a read through workshop on each of the works.
It is intended that both workshops will be documented through recording and photography/film.
Proposals should be up to 200 words outlining the piece composers would like to write, their interest in the trio and how it will benefit their development as a composer. Two scores and/or recordings should be submitted at the same time. These do not need to include any of the featured instruments.
Scores and recordings should be submitted anonymously.
It is the responsibility of the composer to acquire any rights or permissions to text used in the pieces. By submitting to this call for scores the composer confirms that these have been or will be obtained for both performance and recording if selected.
Exact percussion options will be confirmed at the first workshop and in discussion with participants.
It is recognized that composers can begin their career at any age. Therefor ‘emerging’ is defined by the composer themselves though will be at the discretion of judges. Example definitions of emerging include:
- Currently in education or recently left
- Have worked with an orchestra for a development opportunity (e.g. RSNO Composers Hub, LSO Soundhub) but not received regular commissions orchestral or otherwise
- Not have an exclusive agreement with a publisher
These are not exhaustive examples.
Attendance at both the workshops is required. Reasonable expenses for travel and accommodation up to £200 will be covered. Selected composers will also be given an attendance fee of £250 per workshop day.
The workshops will be open to the public and free to attend.
Submission Process
All submission should be submitted through this form: https://forms.gle/Gj57ziMULR78QT6dA
The form requires:
- Up to 200 word expression of interest

- Biography, up to 350 words in Word format, of composer (this will not be used for judging the shortlist, only for eligibility and marketing if shortlisted)
- Headshot

The Night With is a concert series based in Glasgow presenting salon style concerts of interesting music in intimate, informal venues across Scotland and further afield. Run by Matthew Whiteside, it provides development and commissioning opportunities for composers at all stages of their career.
Since founding The Night With… has presented over 80 concerts, 20 commissions, 40 premières and released nine albums on it’s record label TNW Music.
Colombian-American soprano Stephanie Lamprea is an architect of new sounds and expressions as a performer, composer, and multidisciplinary artist, specializing in contemporary classical repertoire. Trained as an operatic coloratura, she uses her voice as a mechanism of avant-garde performance art, creating “maniacal shifts of vocal production and character… like an icepick through the skull” (Jason Eckardt). Her work has been described as “stunning, harrowing, agonising, sonorous…” by The Observer, and “divinely deranged” by The Herald. She has performed as a soloist at Roulette Intermedium, Constellation Chicago, Sound Scotland, Kings Place, Southbank Centre, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, CCA Glasgow, the Hidden Door Festival, and the Casa da Música (Porto). She has released albums Quaking Aspen, Georges Aperghis’ 14 Récitations, and Don’t Add to Heartache to international critical acclaim. Stephanie has also collaborated with Riot Ensemble, International Contemporary Ensemble, the City of London Sinfonia, Sō Percussion, and Post Coal Prom Queen. http://www.stephanielamprea.com/
Darren Gallacher is a percussionist and multi-discipline performer. He has received a Master of Music in Performance with distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music and a First Class Bachelor of Music at Edinburgh Napier University. As a performer he enjoys a varied career working as a percussionist in many settings. He has worked with some of the country’s leading organisations including Scottish Opera, BBCSSO, Scottish Voices, The Halle, and Sinfonia Cymru. He has extensive experience as a chamber musician, most notably being involved in two consecutive tours around China with the RNCM Percussion Sextet, In which he and the group competed at the China National Percussion Competition winning the 2018 chamber category. As a soloist Darren performs a wide range of repertoire and has achieved success, most notable being winning the RNCMs prestigious Gold Medal Competition in 2019 and gaining the 3rd prize at the China National Percussion Competition in the solo marimba category.
Darren’s main expertise lies in the contemporary and experimental music fields and has a particular interest in exploring cross-disciplinary perspectives in performance presentation across different disciplines and the advantages these can bring to music performers and audiences. He is currently doing a PhD at the University of Glasgow under the supervision of Prof Nick Fells, Prof Björn Heile, and Dr Simon Murray between the school of Music and School of Theatre Studies which explores multifaceted approaches to presenting performance, challenging this through his practice as a percussionist. In expanding his existing training across other practices, specifically through the arts, he has developed a unique creative devising practice centred towards musical world building and audience engagement. This has been/is being challenged through his recent multi-discipline performance project Body World Crossings.
Darren was the 2022/23 recipient of the John Lunn Postgraduate Scholarship and previous recipient of the Harriet Cohen Memorial Music Award and Ann Driver trust and Help Musicians UK Scholarships. He is very grateful to the Clark (Mile-end) trust, The Hope Scott Trust, and The Eula Dick Bequest for their support.

He studied flute at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and with Mario Caroli at the Conservatoire de Musique Strasbourg.
He has performed with groups such as Musikfabrik, Klangforum Wien, and several new music ensembles across Europe and the UK. While a member of Distractfold, Richard was co-recipient of the Darmstadt KranichsteinerMusikpreis for Interpretation.
