Call for scores for Juice Vocal Ensemble

The Night With… announces its second call for scores for emerging composers for works for Juice Vocal Ensemble to be performed at The Night With… Juice Vocal Ensemble, 13th and 14th November in the Hug and Pint (Glasgow) and the Fruitmarket (Edinburgh). The programme will include music by Claire McCue and Mica Levi.
From the initial submissions up to five works will be chosen for a workshop with Juice 13th November in Glasgow (times and venue to be confirmed). Fewer may be selected at the discretion of the judges. One of the five works will be chosen to feature in The Night With… concerts on 13th and 14th November 2018. This call for scores is as much about finding and developing interesting new music and composers as finding a new work that will fit within the programme.
All scores must be submitted under a pseudonym. Any scores with identifying marks will be discarded.
Works must be for the trio (2x soprano, alto) . Subsets of the ensemble will not be accepted.
Submissions can be up to 10 minutes long.

Pieces must not have been premiered, however they do not necessarily have to be written for this call.
It is the responsibility of the composer to acquire any rights or permissions to text used in the pieces. By submitting to this call for scores the composer confirms that these have been obtained.
It is recognized that composers can begin their career at any age. Therefor ‘emerging’ is defined by the composer themselves though will be at the discretion of judges. Example definitions of emerging include:
- Currently in education or recently left
- Have worked with an orchestra for a development opportunity (e.g. RSNO Composers Hub, LSO Soundhub) but not received regular commissions orchestral or otherwise
- Not have an exclusive agreement with a publisher
These are not exhaustive examples.
It is intended that the workshop will be documented through recording and photography/film. This is so that the composers involved will have a read-through recording and/or video of their work for their own non-commercial use (e.g. Soundcloud).
Attendance at the workshop is required. There is a small bursary available (up to £100) to cover travel and accommodation expenses of those selected
The workshop will be open to the public and free to attend.
Submission Process
Send all submissions info@thenightwith.co.uk with the subject line ‘Juice call for scores – [pseudonym]’. Within the email include:
- an anonymous PDF score with pseudonym. Filename format: ‘[pseudonym]_[piece-name]’
- a midi mockup of the piece (optional)
- text of the piece
- biography, up to 350 words in Word format, of composer (this will not be used for judging the shortlist, only for eligibility and marketing if shortlisted)
- headshot
The Night With is a new concert series set up by composer Matthew Whiteside (www.matthewwhiteside.co.uk) to perform interesting music in a relaxed environment. The intention is to develop it into a monthly concert series running for six months of the year to include new commissions performed by the highest quality players both Scottish and international and promoting music from all eras but with a bias toward contemporary.
Juice are at the forefront of the UK’s experimental/classical scene, performing new vocal music which draws on classical, world music, jazz, folk, pop, improvisation and theatre. They have featured on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. They have performed at London’s Wigmore Hall and the South Bank, King’s Place and the Roundhouse. In 2011, they made their US debut with concerts in New York and at the famed SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. In 2007, they were the first UK prize winners in the history of the internationally-renowned Tampere Vocal Festival. International performances include concerts in Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Finland and the U.S.
juice regularly commission and premiere new works: recent projects have included performing Hannah Kendall’s new opera, ‘The Knife of Dawn’ at The Roundhouse; premiering a new work by Catherine Carter about the female welders of London’s bridges, under the river Thames in the Bascule Chambers of Tower Bridge; singing about the legalities of copyright in a Radio 4 programme hosted by poet Ian McMillan; performing in one of Radio 3’s experimental live broadcasts, ‘Open Ear’; and celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary by premiering new works with community choirs in Cambridge and Surrey directed by composer Stef Conner.
